Berg, Eugene Carlton “Gene” 81

Gene passed away at VA Health Care Center of St. Cloud on July 17, 2013

Memorial Service: 2PM Saturday July 20, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Cokato.

Visitation: Begins at 12:30 on Saturday at Church

Eugene Carlton Berg was born in Willmar,
Minnesota on Saturday, July 9, 1932, to Berger and Chloe (Johnson)
Berg.  He graduated from Willmar
High School in 1950.  Gene loved sports and played on Willmar’s
1950 undefeated basketball team.

 

Gene served in the United States Air Force from July 2 1951- July 1, 1955
After military service he attended St. Cloud State College and graduated
with degrees in math and physical science.
He taught and coached in Cokato and Dassel schools for 32 years.

 

On October 20,
1961 Gene married Beverly Ann Pipal. Gene and Bev and their 2
children Mike and Maria have made their home in Cokato since their
marriage.  Gene and Bev together started
Cokato Nursery and Landscaping which is now operated by his son Mike and wife
Monica.  He was an active member of the
First Baptist Church of Cokato for 50 years, serving on several boards
including the cemetery board.  He was the
church grounds keeper for many years.
Gene was a member of the Cokato American Legion and the N.E.A.

 

Eugene Carlton Berg passed away at St. Cloud VA Health Care
on July 17, 2013.  He had reached the age of 81years, and 8
days.

 

Survivors include; wife Beverly of Cokato, Son Michael
(Monica) of Cokato and daughter Maria of Cokato.  Grandchildren Morgan and Micah of
Cokato.  Brother: Charles (Marcy) Berg of
Coon Rapids. Sisters: Betty
Junkermeir of Atwater, Carol Brown
of Hutchinson, and Sandra Danielson
of Willmar.

 

Gene was preceded in death by his parents Berger and Chloe
Berg.

Chambers, Daniel K. 60

Daniel Chambers, 60 years young, of Robbinsdale Minnesota, passed away in the
first week of July. He was born in Los Angeles CA, along with his twin sister
Diana. He went to North High, and obtained an associates in accounting from
MCTC. He enjoyed his 4 years in the Air Force, as he got to travel. He was
married to Mary Nielson, and even though they divorced, they continued to remain
close friends. He will be missed by his daughter, Carissa Jay, and new
granddaughter, Skylar Nussbaum; also by many friends and family. Graveside
service will be held at Cokato Finnish Cemetary July 14, 2013 at 9am.

Sundblad, Clifford Alden 95

Clifford passed away on July 9, 2013 at the Buffalo Hospital.

Funeral Service: 11 AM, Saturday, July 13, 2013.  North Crow River Lutheran Church, North of Cokato.

Visitation: 1hr prior to service at Church

Clifford Alden Sundblad was born on May 18th,
1918 in Reeder, ND to Alfred & Tilda (Danielson) Sundblad.  As a baby he moved to the family farm in
Knapp, MN.  He was baptized and confirmed
at North Crow River Lutheran Church in Knapp, MN.  Clifford attended Knapp country school and
graduated from Cokato High School in 1936.
In 1939 Clifford graduated from Dunwoody Technical College in
Minneapolis, MN.  He was united in
marriage to Erma (Thor) Sundblad on December 28th, 1952 in St Paul,
MN; she preceded him in death on July 4th, 1986.  Clifford then married Florence
(Weaver-Higgins) Sundblad on March 17th, 1991 in Tucson, AZ.

As a young man Clifford worked at the Green Giant Canning
factory in Cokato and worked as carpenter and was a member of the carpenters
union in St Cloud, MN for many years.
Clifford also raised turkeys and had a dairy farm in French Lake,
MN.  He was a current member of North
Crow Lutheran church in Knapp, MN and was on the church board for many
years.  Clifford liked to travel and
would spend many winters in Tucson AZ, where he would like to play horseshoes,
shuffleboard and visit with his neighbors.

He is survived by his wife, Florence; son, Allen (Carla)
Sundblad; step daughter Madeleine (David) Heffely; step son John (Marlenne)
Higgins; 5 grandchildren, Steven, Jonathan, Jennifer, Katherine & Philip; 2
great grandchildren Conner and Parker. He was preceded in death by his first
wife Erma Sundblad; parents Alfred and Tilda (Danielson) Sundblad; daughter
Sheila (Sundblad) Ryan; Grandson Jacob Sundblad.

Hokkanen, Howard H. 87

Howard passed away at the St. Cloud Hospital on 6/34/2013.

Funeral Service 11 AM Saturday, 6/29/2013 at Good Shepherd Free Lutheran Church of Cokato

Visitation: 5-8 PM Friday at Church and 1hr prior to service on Saturday.

Interment Riverside Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Adeline
of Annandale; children, Darlene (Dave) Zylstra of Maple Lake, Patty (Steve)
Hohag of St. Michael, and Ken (Bev) Hokkanen of Chaska; grandchildren Kelley
(Erik) Johnson, Joe (Jody) Zylstra, Alison (Ben) Menk, Ryan (Lisa) Zylstra,
Ashley (Jeremiah Flintrop) Zylstra, Ben (Laurie) Hokkanen, and Sara (Clint
Gunkel) Hokkanen; eight great-grandchildren; nephew George (Frances) Abernathy;
niece Liz (Virgil) Carlson, and many relatives and friends.

 

Howard was preceded in death by his
parents, Oscar and Sarah; brothers Walter, Rayno, Elmer, sisters Anna, Elma;
and half- sister Mayme Abernathy.

 

Howard, the son of Oscar and Sarah
Hokkanen was born on the farm near West Albion on April 26, 1926.  He attended the Gunnary country school and
Annandale High School.  During his High
School Junior year a tornado hit the family farm and there was so much work
that he quit school to work on the farm.
In 1962 he received his High School diploma when he passed the G.E.D.
tests at St. Cloud College.  Howard
continued to work on the farm and for a short time he worked at the Ford Motor
Plant in St. Paul.  On April 23, 1949 he
was united in marriage to Adeline Lappi at the Apostolic Church Parsonage in
Cokato.  They lived and worked on the
family farm. In 1977 they built a new home on the farm and have enjoyed living
there for 36 years.  In 1962 he stopped
dairy farming and continued to crop farm.
In 1962 he started working for the Agriculture and Stabilization and Conservation
(A.S.C.) as a Federal Crop Insurance Agent for Wright, Hennepin and Carver
counties.  In 1973 he became the Manager
for the Cokato Mutual Fire Insurance Company and also worked as an insurance
agent for the company.  He worked as the
manager for 23 years, was on the board of directors for 58 years and recently
retired as an insurance agent in 2012.

 

He enjoyed fishing since he was a
young boy when his father took the boys fishing on rainy summer days when they
could not work on the farm and he continued to enjoyed many fishing outings
with family and friends.  He was active
on his bowling team and enjoyed winning several championships.  He loved sports and enjoyed playing in casual
baseball, football and basketball games.
He continued to follow all the professional Minnesota sport teams
throughout his life; especially baseball.
Howard loved living on the farm and he loved his family and enjoyed
keeping up with all their activities.  He
liked nothing better than to visit and enjoy meals with his family and
friends.

Shepherd Free Lutheran Church of Cokato and CentraCare Health Foundation (St.
Cloud Hospital).

Kariniemi, Paul Hubert 86

Paul Hubert Kariniemi (Butch), of South Haven, MN, died June 23, 2013 at 5:49 PM after reaching the age of 86 years, 7 months, 29 days. His loving wife, Gladys, of 63 years, and his children, were by his side as he took his last breath.

He was born at home in Fulton, MI October 25, 1926. The doctor did not expect him to live through that first night, but the Heavenly Father granted him over 86 years on this earth before taking him to his Eternal Home.

Paul attended the Mohawk schools and graduated from Calumet High School in 1944. He served on the USS McCord with the U.S. Navy during WWII. On July 1, 1950, he was united in marriage to Gladys Halonen. After graduating from Michigan Technological University in 1951, he worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, MI and then at 3M in St. Paul, MN as a Mechanical Engineer, retiring in 1988. Paul and Gladys thoroughly enjoyed retirement life with family and friends on Lake Sylvia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Nestor and Anna P. (Loukusa), brothers; Werner, Daniel E. (Helen Ruonavaara), Albert U., sister Hulda E. (Otto) Hermanson, grandsons; Jaegar P. Lee, Michael and David Kariniemi, great-granddaughter Bridget L. Sorvala and brother-in-law Norman Nelson. He is survived by wife Gladys E. (Halonen) of South Haven MN, children; Deborah K. Landa of Delano MN, Paul W. (Sandra Simonson) of Wayzata MN, Robert C. (Eeva Salminen) of Plymouth MN, Stephen D. (Ann Keskey) of Phoenix AZ, Judith S. Waaraniemi of Robbinsdale MN, Mark R. (Mirjami Vuorma) of Maple Grove MN, Michael D. (Karen Keskey) of Corcoran MN, Donald A. (Carol Hillukka) of Rockford MN, Anita L. (Samuel) Lee of Maple Lake MN, Mary A. (Rodrick) Sorvala of Buffalo MN, Philip N. (Margaret Alajoki) of Corcoran MN, Karen R. (David) Young of Buffalo MN, sister Signe Nelson of Brighton MI, sister-in-law Betty (Saarela) Kariniemi of Copper City MI, 95 grandchildren, 109 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and extended family.  Through faith, Paul attained his Heavenly goal.

Visitation is June 27, 2013 from 5-8 PM with a 7 PM service.  Funeral is June 28, 2013 at 11 AM.  Visitation and funeral will be at the Cokato Laestadian Lutheran Church.  Funeral arrangements will be handled by Swanson-Peterson of Cokato, MN.
